Embryonic, fetal and post-natal animal-human mixtures: an ethical discussion.

چکیده
Overview: The potential power of embryonic and fetal inter-species mixtures became clear about a decade ago in a series of dramatic experiments in which small sections of brains from developing quails were taken and transplanted into the developing brains of chickens. The resulting chickens exhibited vocal trills and head bobs unique to quails, proving that the transplanted parts of the brain contained the neural circuitry for quail calls. It also offered astonishing proof that complex behaviors could be transferred across species.1

The ethical assessment of research that uses pluripotent stem cells derived from human embryos and aborted fetal tissue gives rise to serious ethica;-legal question concerning embryonic sancitity and the legality of abortion in Islamic tradition. Although the rulings given by Muslim jurists in this regard are ingerentially deduced on the basis of the precedents in the criminology connected with...
متن کاملHyper-Prolificacy and Acceptable Post-Natal Development - A Possible Contradiction
Although the components of litter size (ovulation rate, embryonic survival and uterine capacity) responsive to genetic selection are well established. However, the reality in existing “hyper-prolific” sows is that increased selection pressure for numbers born has led to indirect negative effects of intra-uterine crowding, reprogramming of fetal development, less efficient post-natal growth perf...
متن کاملEthical Issues in Stem Cell Transplantation
There is great interest worldwide in discovering and developing a permanent source of tissues which would be capable of generating any cell type and which would avoid the problem of transplant rejection. Stem cells are cells that can specialize into the many different cells found in the human body. The ethical objections concerning stem cells have focused primarily on their source. Human embry...
متن کاملModeling the development of the post-natal mouse thymus in the absence of bone marrow progenitors
Many mathematical models have been published with the purpose of explaining aspects of T-cell development in the thymus. In this manuscript we adapted a four-compartment model of the thymus and used a range of mathematical approaches with the aim of explaining the dynamics of the four main thymocyte populations in the mouse thymus, from the emergence of the first fetal thymocyte until the death...
متن کاملPerinatal germ cell development and differentiation in the male marmoset (Callithrix jacchus): similarities with the human and differences from the rat
STUDY QUESTION Is perinatal germ cell (GC) differentiation in the marmoset similar to that in the human? SUMMARY ANSWER In a process comparable with the human, marmoset GC differentiate rapidly after birth, losing OCT4 expression after 5-7 weeks of age during mini-puberty. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Most of our understanding about perinatal GC development derives from rodents, in which all gonoc...
